The Role of Medication

Medication can be a significant factor in keeping people with mental health problems well. However, people may need to live with distressing side effects and not really understand why they are taking the medications that have been prescribed. This workshop will try to explain the role the medication has in terms of people’s recovery and will explore some of the issues relating to the use of medication and how to get the best medication regime for your needs.

An Overview of the Mental Health Act

The Mental Health Act 1983 and your rights. This course offers an overview of the Mental Health Act 1983. It will cover compulsory admissions to hospital, how patients are detained and why, the different sections and their impact on the patient and when this can be challenged and how. There will be discussion around consent to treatment and the use of Community Treatment Orders.

Dual Diagnosis is a loose term for clients with a mental illness whose alcohol and/or drug use is either a problem or becoming a problem. There are many myths in regard to this condition, from ‘nothing can be done’ to ‘why don’t they help themselves?’ The condition and these issues are explored in depth, and a range of treatments and strategies presented and discussed.

During this course we will look at how and when you may apply for a tribunal. There will be discussion of the make up and process of the tribunal and how tribunals reach their decisions. Understanding Eating Disorders
